Things we don't need anymore

Two of the all-time great airlines. Pan American airlines folded in 1991, ten years before Stanley Kubrick's movie vision of the airline becoming a spaceline shuttling passengers to an orbiting station above the earth's atmosphere in "2001: a space odyssey." Trans World Airlines officially ended in the year 2001 when the bankrupt company was bought by American Airlines. Another connection to Kubrick was the remarkable JFK terminal, whose corridors are referenced in the space station sequences in the "2001" movie. Built by Eero Saarinen in 1962, the building (Terminal 5) could not adapt to increased airport security measures and has been sporadically used since then. Also sad is the Pam Am terminal at JFK which is now used by Delta and the building is in a very sorry state, shared by passengers, pigeons and sparrows.

Tim Finn In 10 videos or less

Tim Finn

Few pop musicians have had such a varied career as New Zealander Tim Finn. He always gets good reviews in the right places and consistently plays small clubs in major markets in the US, while selling out theatres in much of the rest of world.

It began, of course with Split Enz, the artrock band that was mega in Australasia, but didn’t crack the rest of the world until the timing was right to package the Enz as “New Wave.” Here are early pre-hit videos for "My Mistake" and "Bold as Brass."

The early band was as much about design as it was about their neurotic, jerky and close-to-prog-rock musical excesses, that made them truly distinct and quite essential. However, even guided by Roxy Music’s innovative guitarist Phil Manzanera, who produced the album "Mental Notes," the band couldn’t make it above the equator.

The US sales breakthrough came when Neil Finn, Tim’s younger brother, took over the artistic control of the band by default when a series of classic power pop tunes with attractive videos proved perfect for MTV-programming. Here is the video for chart success "I Got You."

Unable to sustain sales in the America, Tim left Split Enz before the prophetically titled final Enz album "See Ya 'Round" and brother Neil morphed the group into the Mullanes (for a few days!) which then evolved into the great Crowded House.

Tim released solo albums including "Escapade" in 1983 which included this video; "Made My Day."

He collaborated with Brit Folk Rock God Richard Thompson. Here they sing “Persuassion.”

He worked with the combo ALT (with Andy White and Liam O'Maonlai of The Hothouse Flowers) in 1994. Here is a video for "Look What You’ve Done."

He also re-joined briefly his brother in Crowded House and contributed to the highly successful (everywhere but in the US) record, “Woodface.” Here is the first single from the album; "Chocolate Cake."

Despite tension between the brothers both being in da House at the same time, they went on to record successful albums together. Here is the video for "Won’t Give In" from 2004’s "Everyone Is Here."

Here is a 13 minute 2006 interview on Oz tv. I think it’s the Australian “60 minutes.”

Both brothers have contributed music to movie soundtracks (and Tim was romantically linked to Australian movie star Greta Scacchi in the late eighties). Every few years the brothers do re-union projects with members of Split Enz. The final performance of Crowded House, featuring both Finns, on the steps of the Sydney Opera House in 1996 (Farewell to the World) has just been released on CD, and DVD (January, 2007 in the US).

Here’s a video for the single "Couldn't Be Done" from Tim’s new album, "Imaginary Kingdom," as well as a brief interview.

Here's a link back in this site to a series of recent video interviews with Tim.

This entry may not have a very long life. EMI has decided to sue YouTube and many of these releases are on EMI or associated labels, so could be pulled any second..... As a bonus link: Here are the lyrics to the Sex Pistols' song EMI.

Enjoy now, and buy Tim's new album.

Forgotten Moments in Rock 'n Roll

Released in 1977. People so upset by the title. Really upset that blue laws were broken and the album was sold on a Sunday at certain Virgin stores in London. This flyer/coupon was not used. It's a very good record. Here they are singing (with Sid) "God Save the Queen."

Things we don't need anymore

A WNEW-FM wallet card from 1980. Lots of phone numbers for things are not there any more -- from the incredibly sad: World Trade Center Observation Deck, to the recently removed: CBGBs. A simpler time. And the old WNEW was the best rock station in the history of New York City.

Forgotten Moments in Rock 'n Roll

I think alot of us very soon forgot that Governor Nelson Rockefeller died right around the same time as Sex Pistol Sid Vicious.

Popping Bubbles

Here is a virtual thrill that is almost the real thing. Popping bubblewrap. It's been around for awhile, but it still brings joy. Enjoy here.

Stranger than Fiction

was the name of an early Split Enz song. Just saw a screening of the movie Stranger than Fiction starring Emma Thompson and Will Ferrell. Highpoint of the movie for me was when Will Ferrell picks up a guitar in Maggie Gyllenhaal's apartment and sings an accoustic version of the classic Wreckless Eric song "Whole Wide World" which has been referrenced more than once on this blog. Here it is again courtesy of YouTube.

Doctor Who moment

For no particular reason, but for the fact that Doctor Who is actually good television again, here is a montage of the opening credits for all but one of the incarnations of the BBC tv show. I liked the theme music best when the bass really rumbled. I also think that the actors blurred after Jon Pertwee and didn't really have interesting characters until the most recent two.

Torchwood is interesting. Maybe a little mean spirited. Has the feel of Blake's Seven with bigger budget. Here are sites for Torchwood and Blake's Seven.

YouTube and Google Video

There are daily reports in old media that all unapproved copyright material will be taken off YouTube and other mainstream (!) video websites. I apologize if some of the links don't work any more. So far, everything seems to be holding. When does YouTube run out of space?

IBR 1975 Page Five

Ah, the Nick Drake thing... Here is a photo montage cut to "River Man" that Island put out to promo another compilation of the work of the late public school boy. Here is part one and part two of a strange tribute film called "A Stranger Among Us -- Searching for Nick Drake." Deceased 1974.

No video of Sandy Denny exists on the usual sites. Also very influential to UK music scene. Appeared on dozens of albums. Deceased 1978.

More stuff about these guys in the previously-mentioned, rather good Joe Boyd book "White Bicycles."

Betty Davis was Miles Davis' second wife.
